Too well loved, they broke. - 31st Blogtober

I love cheap make up.  Affordable make up that can be bought in pharmacy or chain beauty stores are something I cannot stop buying.  Many of them do not differ much from the powders and potions you obtain from department stores or beauty boutiques.  Price differences are mainly due to cost related to rent, marketing, packaging that kind of thing.  The product itself, could deliver very similar results.

I am a rough lover.  In this post I'm going to briefly review three cheap products that I use and love a lot.  However, sadly, their cheap packaging had been broken by my constant heavy-duty using.  No worry, I will not dispose them because I broke them.  They will continue be well-loved for ever after - kidding, just until they're gone!

Momo Eyebrow Powder #02.  This cost me around HKD $20 (less than USD $3) in a pharmacy.  These powders are of the most 'natural' colours for dark to black hair.  I have used this on various models, and it flatters all of them.  The powder are smooth and pigmented, but with enough powder filler to make it blend-able and soft looking.  I do not like tattooed on sharp brow looks on me nor my models.  The durability of this is amazing, lasts long on most skin except super oily.  To combat skin oil, it is better to seal in the colour with translucent powder or liquid sealant/ brow set.

Lavshuca, Powder Compact Eyebrow #LB-1.  LB stands for light brown, and this typically costs around HKD $80 (USD $10).  This brow compact comes with a dark and a medium matte brown shades, which are the brow powders.  On the right there's a taupe-bone colour, which can double up as nose shadow and brow setting powder.  It also came with a very handy and nice quality dual ended brush that is highly use-able.  I love using the angle-side to apply the medium brow shade all over.  The dome blender side is used with the lightest shade as nose shadow as well as crease contouring.  High powder quality and spot on colouring.  Not to mention, the staying power is impressive.  Perfect.

Canmake, Eyeshadow Base.  The only good price eye primer that works and is available in the local market.  It is like a brightening concealer that has just a hint of waxy texture to hold the eyeshadow you applied on top of it.  Brilliant product, and kindly priced at HKD $68 (USD $9 roughly).

Lesson learnt?  Be gentle and meek to the humble (humbly priced make up), otherwise relationship will not be long.  Me and plastic hinges don't get along.  If my lovers (affordable make up) have them, huge chances are, I'm gonna rape (rip) them hard and painful.

Conclusion.  With all the above being said, I have an uneasy feeling that these case-broken (not heart-broken) lovers will continue to come.  :S  Now I need advice on how to mend them, without replacing them!!!

Small Splurge: from Macau, or Macao

It is too complicated for me to explain to you, how Macau (or Macao) and Hong Kong (my city) became colonies of Portugal and Great Britain centuries ago.  The fact today is, we are both Special Administrative Regions of China.  The major differences?  HK is roughly 36 times bigger than Macau in area, and 12 times more populated.  HK's second language (or sometimes the preferred) is English, while Macau road signs place English after Portuguese, and most of the residents do not speak either of them.

Macau is a city famous of its churches, casinos and cuisine.  (It is a coincidence that they all start with a 'C'!?)  As a Catholic myself, I had participated in their city-wide processions and paid pilgrimages to various churches.  Casinos, on the other hand, none of my interest.  The one thing that I am interested to try is the real slot machines that have rolls spinning, and a handle to pull.  However, as advised by my fiancé and per my personal observations, all of the current offerings are electronics.  To me, seeing the screen flashes is different from seeing the rolls turn; enough to put me off gambling.  Cuisine will be out of this blog's context, if you want to know about the fabulous food Macau offers, I will have to make another post for you.

That being said, I didn't spend a penny gambling but I did spend a little dollars inside the Venetian complex.  They have a Victoria's Secret store that stocks limitedly, but enough for me to get crazy.  Over-priced and limited selection indeed, but better than none.  There are bags and accessories (no thanks), panties (not bad but I wasn't in the mood nor need to get any), perfumes (lovely but pretty expensive), body sprays and lotions (I got 1) and a few make up bits and pieces.

Sasa was the other store that made me shopped.  Honestly it is the same as the Sasa in HK, they even accepts my HK VIP card.  I bought these for 2 reasons, one being I need these things immediately in the trip, second is with the currency difference I saved a few extra %.  (dumb..)

Once again, if you haven't already, pay my Giveaway post a visit - link - I'd appreciate you leave a comment or entering it. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

I wanted to get something that smells classic, sweet and relaxing, not too feminine or overpowering or deep. The Amber Romance is one of the several lower priced Fragrance Mists in store.  Its scent is described as amber and crème anglaise (as if English cream is not the English for itself, we have a French word in English for it?).  It is warm, slightly sensual and pretty concentrated.  I do not regret getting this as my 1st Victoria's Secret souvenir.  ;)

Onto the Sasa stuff.

I went in with a few things in mind, first being false lashes.  I didn't bring along any with me, and on the 1st night, I panicked and wanted to get a pair or two, just in case I needed that in the day/night after, right?  So I picked up Dolly Wink No.2 Sweet Girly in the special 3 pairs packaging.  It seems bargainous to me, and it also comes with a good glue!  Not pictured above, I have also bought a small pair of scissors to trim them.  In the hotel room good lighting and big mirror, I found my face to be huge, round, flat, and needed some good contouring.  Without any shading powder in my luggage, I tried to get one from Sasa.  I struggled between the Canmake Shading Powder in shade 01, and the new Kate shade and highlight duo.  Despite already owning two of the Canmake Shading Powder, I finally bought my 3rd, because it is smooth, pigmented, neutral, and matte.  If anyone is interested in getting my brand new back up (i.e. the 2nd one I purchased), tell me!  There's also a little sharpener because I thought I forgot to bring one (which in fact I do have).

In picture two, only the white powder was 'needed', I got the Media Cheek Color WT-1 because I didn't bring along a highlight.  Not that I can't live without highlight for a long weekend, but that I really wanted to get one.  Along with that, into my basket were one in PK-2, a Canmake Cheek and Cheek in shade 05, and a Pupa eye pencil in 04 - a very beautiful champagne gold.  Then there are the random Farmasi Ultra Aloe Vera and Menthol Wet Towels.

The newly furnished, or built, Holiday Inn room we lodged in was neat and reasonably spacious, with a good-size big tub.  I thought it would be nice to have a bath in it, so I went ahead and got some Kracie Aroma Resort Lovely Bath bath salts.  The display unit at Sasa actually has sample pots of all the scents (there were about 5 to 6), and Happy Sweet Peach appealed to me.  I got two packs as I'm not sure how concentrated it is - sometimes with bath salt, you need 2 for 1 tub.  This actually is very good value as you only need one for a full tub!

The Ecopure Smoothing Body Butters in Cocoa Butter and Honey and Shea were bought because of their good-ingredients-claims.  Turned out, throughout the trip I was busy using up the other body moisturisers I yet have time to open these up.  On the other hand, In Essence Energy Body Oil was well loved by both me and my fiancé.  It says it is invigorating, enlivening, for fitness and mobility with essential oils (EO) of Grapefruit, Lemon, Peppermint, Juniper and Rosemary.  I massaged these to our legs before bed, I enjoyed the aromathereupatic part, he took pleasure in being massaged.  It is economical because a little bit goes a long way, and the moisture stays well overnight.  The blend was not over-powering, quite significantly grapefruit-y.  Good stuff!

Side note: As these purchases were made non-locally, as always, these will not be counted as 'real' purchases.  Every time I spend foreign currencies I feel like playing monopoly. :P  Also, with the tag 'Shameless Spoil' you should by now know that these aren't really 'my' money.  Someone sweet and lovely spoilt me.  :")

Have you been to Macau, or a casino?  Do you gamble?  Do you take bath in hotel tubs?

Finished Fortnight #1 - After a short trip

First of all, I acknowledge that I have only done my previous empties post less than a fortnight ago - link.  However, as some of you may be aware of, I went on a short trip for my birthday last week, hence I brought alone a bunch of samples and travel sizes and products on their last legs to use up.  Therefore, this post.  Also, I am kind of tempted to do this series called 'Finished Fortnight' because I'm really going through things so fast

Secondly.  Inspired by the neat hotel room we stayed in, which was the Holiday Inn at Sands Cotai Central, I came home and decided to clear out my family wash-room   Turned out, I clear out a dozen of empties and old stuff that have to be tossed.  I pictured them and included them below for whoever information/reference too.  If I have tried those, I would also do a short short review and rating with them if I have tried them personally.

By the way, I have updated my giveaway - link - with the little prizes I have put together, so please check that out.  Do not enter it because of the prices (they are pretty unattractive anyway).  Do enter it because I'd love to have interactions with you guys!

Things I used up in my short trip (#249-256) :

  • Alverde, Wildrose Tagescreme/Vanishing Cream - Okay - My mum got this for me while my parents were away visiting Germany.  Alverde was one of the brands I have requested her to shop around for.  This cream is thick but quite quick-absorbing.  Has a lovely rose scent and does improve skin's feeling and look.  However, the shelf life is short due to the ingredients (all organic or natural?) and the packaging is a bit 'meh'.  I have good impressions with this brand but I'm not sure with this item in particular.
  • Rexona Women, 24Hr Protection Anti-Perspirant Deodorant 'Cotton' - No Way - Sticky and nearly 'suffocating'.  Smells clean but isn't sticky an enough drawback?
  • Burt's Bees, Extra Energizing Citrus and Ginger Root Body Wash - Hurray - Very gingerly and invigorating and refreshing.  I really think the 'extra energizing' claim is there.  Not drying either.  You doesn't need a lot of this to foam up or to enjoy a full shower.  It lasted both my fiancé and me the entire 4 days, probably 10 showers?  I'd seriously consider getting this in full size!
  • Pantene Clinicare, Hair Time Renewal One Wash Treatment - Hurray - I've talked about this many times.  Like the product itself a lot, and love the tube packaging.  If used sparingly, it can be used for 2 washes.  Very convenient for short trips.
  • Pantene Clinicare, Color/Perm Damage Repair Treatment - Okay - Good, but not spectacular.
  • Nivea, Pure and Natural Body Lotion For Normal to Dry Skin with Bio Argan Oil - Okay - Decent stuff.  Moisturised well, but I feel like it absorbed rather slowly.  Not thick enough for overnight use either.
  • Kracie, Aroma Resort Lovely Bath 'Happy Sweet Peach' - Hurray - Gem of the trip.  I purchased 2 packs of this in the Sasa Macau as I thought I didn't bring along any bath products.  I got 2 because I am not sure how concentrated this stuff is.  Turned out, 1 pack turned a full tub of water into a sweet peach indulgence.  It is so good (and affordable) I'm thinking of getting the other scents and their body lotions too!

Some skin care bits (#257-261):

  • The Body Shop, Natrulift Firming Serum - Okay? - I will probably give this a 'No Way', because it is the emulsion/creamy kind of serum that I'm not particularly fond of.  However, I still have a good few samples of this lying around so I'll give this a few more goes before I decide on it.
  • Missha Super Aqua Marine Forest Lifting Serum - No Way - Kind of a hydrating and lifting serum.  It doesn't have instant effect, and the consistency and scent is pretty mediocre.
  • O'Slee, Aqua Medi Refreshing Hydro-Cream - No Way - Pretty fresh and hydrating, but not moisturising enough.  Just doesn't impress me at all.
  • O'Slee, Rosehip Beauty Solution Advanced Formula III - Okay - I have used the previous version of this and find that alright.  This 'advanced formula' seems decent.  If I get another sample of this I wouldn't mind to use.
  • Missha, Speedy Solution Clearing Gel Eye Patch - Hurray - Nice stuff.  Very good design/packaging with the plastic insert that assists you to put the mask on.  Does hydrate well, and help with puffiness a tad.  I won't pay for the HK full price though.  Ridiculously marked up.

And then onto the stuff I cleared out from my family wash-room....

Empties:
Mayblesally, Style Rubber Hair Wax
Gatsby, Moving Rubber 'Spiky Edge'
Gatsby, Moving Rubber 'Grunge Mat'
Rexona Women, Body Responsive 'Cotton Fresh' Anti-Perspirant Deodorant
Adidas, Team Force Deo Body Spray
Adidas, Action 3 Intensive Anti- Perspirant
Gatsby, Deodorant Spray 'Cool Marine'

Tossed:
Bioglo, Ceramide Intensive Repair Hair Moisturizer Leave-On - Expired.
HairTec, Intensive Serum (for hair) - No Way - Greasy.
Prexceed, Hair Water - Okay - But I don't style nor treat my hair often enough.  Expired.
Shiseido, Pimplit Acne Remedy - No Way - I remember this is a weird-coloured cream which was not effective at treating acne.
Essence, Eye Makeup Remover - No Way - Read my previous post for further info - link.
Neutrogena - Pure Glow Daily Cleansing Cushions - No Way - Also mentioned in the same post as above - link once more.
Neutrogena, Ultra Sheer Sport Sunblock Lotion - Okay - I used this, and then lend it to my sister, and then it's now expired.  Not with a bad price or quality, but not the best thing ever.
Jean Philippe Paris, 'Glow by J.Lo' Fragranced Gentle Deodorant Body Spray - Okay? - I don't like aerosol type of spray, but I bought this for my sisters.  Turned out, no one wants it.  It is some kind of 'dupe' but I haven't smelt the original J.Lo Glow to compare.

What have you used up recently?  Do you want to read my 'Finished Fortnight' if I really do it every other weekend?  :P

Nails of the (Birth)day

It was my birthday last week, and I went out of town with my fiancé on a short trip.  I didn't pay much time doing my nails the night before, hence the application was pretty sloppy.  I did remember to use a top coat though, as for the entire short trip I knew I wouldn't have time doing touch-ups.

Anyway, this was a combination of 2 Missha nail polishes that I have acquired this month, rather recently I must say, and the top coat is a new favourite.  Being a Missha member means every few months or so, I receive certain promotion discounts encouraging me to visit their stores and spend some money.  In my birthday month, I could even get a little birthday present (it's been face masks for a few years now).  Missha does make decent products, and their nail polishes are some of the more affordable items in their offerings.

Both of the colours are in the "The Style Lucid Nail Polish" range.  I believe these are from the newly released Autumn palettes.  The pink shade you see is PK12, a pretty muted, medium depth, soft creamy pink.  Slightly on the warm side, with very fine gold shimmer through it.  The nude taupe shade is BR05, plain cream, no shimmer, a tiny hint of khaki in it.  Both of these applied very smoothly, and with 2 layers, it is opaque and beautiful.  The brush is reasonably flat and easy to work with, however I find them to be cut in a blunt way, not as curved and smooth as the Lancome or Bourjois ones.

The top coat I used is from Kiss, a Japanese brand that is not officially represented in Hong Kong.  My sister picked that up while we were in Tokyo (and made me pay for it), and I recently started using it.  Lovely stuff.

What is on your nails now?  Are you wearing pink, nude, dark, glitters, or nothing?

FOTD Paris Haute Couture Versace AW12

To be frank, I was not a big fan of fashion weeks.  Not only because I'm a little passive about fashion, but also because I really like make up more than garments.  I appreciate the total look more than the dresses themselves, and most of the times, the make up and hair do not get enough coverage from the press.  That's until I found a seasonal magazine called In Beauty.  It is published in Taiwan, where I bought mine.  They compile all the make up looks from Paris Haute Couture, Paris, London, Milan and New York fashion weeks every season.  Close-ups.  Hair.  There began my interests in fashion weeks.  If you're interested, perhaps you can visit their website www.instyle-fashion.com.tw for further - I don't work for them and have no idea how they run.

Anyway.

The copy I have in hand is Issue 9 for Autumn/Winter 12.  Last month I re-created on Jen - link - the statement eyeliner look from London Fashion Week AW12 - Mary Katrantzou's show.  Here I copy another one of the AW12.  A look from the Paris Haute Couture Week AW12 - Versace Show.

Inspiration:

My Favourite Shot:

I invited my fiance to shoot a few shots for me as I am a little bored of always talking selfie.  I was also a bit exhausted after doing this make up, weird.

Out of the dozens he took, this was the best I feel, that captured the bright skin and eye shape.

Before:

In case you're not familiar with how I look like, here is a weird image with black waterline and 1 side started with eyeshadow.  XD

More 'after make up' pictures will follow after I discussed about the products used.

What I Used:

Face/ Base:

  • Inglot, Under Makeup Base - silicon base gel.  not a big fan of.
  • Clinique, Supermoisture Makeup #64 Cream Beige (M-G) - one of my favourite foundation to mimic perfect flawless dewy base with the illusion of 'my skin is well taken care of' or 'i have had 10 hour sleep'.
  • YSL, Touche Eclat #2 - under the eyes as I currently have bad dark circles.
  • The Balm, Mary-lou Manizer - instead of pressed powder, I used this highlighter all over my face to set the make up, as I wanted a full on GLOW.
  • *no blush or contour, true to the images I have*

Brows:

  • Lavshuca, Powder Compact Eyebrow #LB-1
  • Mio Piccolo, Brow Mascara #LB - light brown tint on brows

Eyes:

  • Nars, Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base - nice stuff.
  • Burberry Beauty, Sheer Eye Shadow #06 Almond - crease colour.  the most amazing matte brown in the world.  not my everyday socket/ crease colour as this is too dark for that purpose; but for this look, perfect.
  • Illamasqua, Neutral Palette - #Stealth, a pale cream as brow bone highlight.  #Vintage is my lid/ main colour, extraordinarily beautiful brown shimmer.  #Wolf is the black I used around lash line and outer corner.
  • Urban Decay, 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil #Zero - Waterline, lash line, thick and messily.
  • Gold eyeshadow from 72 shimmer palette - highlight inner corners.
  • Dolly Wink, Lash Glue
  • False Lashes - one set from Daiso, one set from Bonjour.  They don't have a brand and I threw away their packaging.

Lips:

  • MAC, Cremesheen Lipstick #Creme D' Nude - I didn't use the lipstick palette in the end.
